Reading the Room
“Reading the room” sounds familiar, casual, and almost effortless. It isn’t. It’s a sophisticated mix of awareness, intuition, empathy, and timing.
At its core, it’s sensing what’s actually happening beneath the surface—the emotional tone, shifting energy, and even the hidden agendas.
Reading the room is sorta like analog in a digital world—onstage, in the boardroom, and in our conversations that matter.
Here are three reminders that work for me:
Slow your reactions. Awareness needs space.
Check your assumptions. That’s where things go off the rails.
Get out of your head. If your monkey mind is the loudest voice, you’re deaf to the room.
Important because when you can feel the room (and the people in it)—whether it’s a recording session, a staff meeting, an SRO audience, or one-on-one—you meet the people in front of you where they are, not where you assume they should be.
