Flooring it!

"Faster, faster, the lights are turnin' red…Life in the fast lane."

How did we get so addicted to speed? The race to finish. The scramble to make a buck. The rush to capture a brilliant idea before it slips away. The urge to finally reach a fait accompli on the current project so we can jump-start the next one.

Even our thinking is stuck in the fast lane—thinking while we eat, while we drive, while we brush our teeth. Thinking when we’re meditating. Thinking instead of sleeping. Thinking too much in the middle of romance! The monkeys between our ears are having a field day while we’re just trying to stay in the moment and get the job done—all at the speed of thought!

The corporate chiefs and gatekeepers who many of us are beholden to seem to move at a slower, more calculated pace than we do. Maybe that’s why it takes forever to get a response, a reaction, a call back, or a final decision from anyone holding the keys.

Maybe there’s a lesson there. In an industry obsessed with the fast track, I think it’s okay—even smart—to move slower. We can still get excited, still feel the fire, still hit every deadline and advance with purpose—just in deliberate slow motion. Think slower. Speak slower. Move slower. Act slower. Kinda like slow dancing in a burning room.

Important because the more we allow ourselves to move through the details and demands of our careers and lives at a slower, steadier pace, the clearer our thinking becomes, the sharper our focus, and the easier it is to recognize what’s truly wanted and needed. Not like being pushed by urgency, more like being guided by clarity.
