Elegantly Disheveled
A friend from France sent me an email, and his opening line was, “I like to live my life with as much Sprezzatura as I can.” He assumed I knew what that meant and just continued on with his thought. I had to ask Webster: “The Italian art of making the difficult look effortless; studied nonchalance; graceful conduct or performance without apparent effort; elegantly disheveled.”
This instantly became my new favorite word! I like to shout it at the sky in my best Italian accent: “Sprezzatura!”
For artists and entrepreneurs, sprezzatura is a quiet form of power. It’s not pretending things are easy—it’s cultivating such mastery over your craft, with such grace and inner calm, that pressure doesn’t rattle your rhythm. It’s moving through challenging choices and high-stakes decisions with a sense of creative ease that others don’t quite understand, yet are deeply drawn to. It’s not that you care less; it’s that you care so deeply that chaos cannot shake your center.
Important because in a media obsessed with distraction, drama, hustle, noise, and constant urgency, sprezzatura is rebellion. It says: I will strive, but I will not strain. I will care, but I will not get entangled in the madness. When you embody this energy, your presence becomes magnetic, and your work speaks without your needing to shout. Not because you’ve learned a new word, more because you’ve discovered that progress isn’t fueled by frenzy.
