Catch-22
It’s the apprehension of not getting it right, or blowing it, or failing that always presents the biggest risk. Uncertainty provokes fear and doubt, which provokes heightened anticipation and anxiety, which often provokes a flinch that could cause a great idea to fade, or a worthy project to falter.
On the other hand when creative artists & entrepreneurs fall into a pattern, or a comfort zone, where their work becomes safe and routine, they focus more on expectations rather than inspiration, and then their work begins to stagnate and suffer.
As the Stones would say: “We’re caught between a rock and a hard place.”
Important because while the angst of doubt and indecision is a daunting feeling, it’s often temporary, because it can push an artist/trep to innovate and stretch her limits. However, once the work becomes routine, it undermines the very drive that made us choose this journey to begin with—which would pose a greater long-term risk. There really is no solution to this catch-22. There’s only a choice. As Alanis would say: “It’s a little too ironic…don’t you think?”
